Austin Named "Startup Hub". Austin has been named a "Startup Hub" by Fast Company magazine's annual 30 Fast Cities of the world list. The magazine judged cities in nine categories including "Creative-Class Meccas," "R&D Clusters," "Urban Innovators" and "Green Leaders." Cities were selected based on three basic criteria: a culture that nurtures creative action and game-changing enterprise, innovation and energy. Among the city's characteristics that landed Austin on the list are the high number of Wi-Fi hot spots per capita and its relatively young population, according to the magazine. (Fast Company, 7/07)

The Central Texas Angel Network (CTAN) is a not-for-profit entity that provides quality investment opportunities for accredited Central Texas investors. The network acts solely as a facilitator of the investment process, providing members with a method by which members may meet, view, analyze and monitor investment opportunities.

The Central Texas Regional Center of Innovation and Commercialization (CenTex RCIC) is a virtual center that operates out of the Austin Chamber of Commerce and serves as a catalyst for emerging technology research, development, commercialization, and start-up incubation. In an effort to keep Texas globally competitive, the CenTex RCIC is an enabler for coordinating the region’s research entities and technology firms in regards to the Emerging Technology Fund. The center focuses on integrating technology development and commercialization.

More traditional financing can be obtained through banks or through programs affiliated with the Small Business Administration (SBA). The more owners have invested into their business, the more likely they are to be eligible for conventional loans or other financing.
